Galamsey Pit Kills Boy,12

THE NAKED corpse of a 12-year old class 3 pupil has been found floating atop the still waters of an opened galamsey mining pit at Nsuem No 2 in the Bosome Freho District of the Ashanti Region.

There are many of such opened galamsey pits scattered all over the vicinity and reports suggest they pose as death traps to residents although many of such calamities go unreported. Some of the open pits are said to be over a thousand feet deep.

THE PUBLISHER gathered that the dead child was identified as Maxwell Acheampong, also known as Nana Yaw, and was suspected to have drowned while attempting to take a swim in the water-filled pit.

Unknown to the child, the abandoned galamsey pit was deep in depth so he got drowned after he jumped into the water to swim.

Reports say it was a sunny afternoon and Nana Yaw, who had closed from school decided to cool off in the water of the abandoned mining pit.

The class three pupil then took off his school uniform and jumped into the water but that was the end of his life as he got drowned.

Some people later on saw Nana Yaw’s dead body floating on the water so they informed the police and some opinion leaders in the community.

Expert swimmers were then engaged as life guards to swim and retrieve the lifeless body of the deceased with police assistance and supervision.

The heartbreaking incident happened at Nsuem No 2 in the Bosome Freho District in the Ashanti Region.

THE PUBLISHER gathered that the sad demise of Nana Yaw threw the entire community into a state or mourning on Wednesday.

The remain has been buried by his family.

Some of the people around complained that there are several abandoned mining pits scattered all over the country, which poses danger to the people.

They therefore appealed passionately to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his government to take a decisive action about the danger.
