GFA Hunts For New Black Stars Coach Two Months To World Cup

The Ghana Football Association has sacked Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars.

The decision was announced in a statement released by the GFA’s communications team on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. The association also thanked the coach for his service to the country.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately.

“The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours,” parts of the statement read.

The GFA added that it will soon announce a new technical direction for the team.

“The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”

Backing the decision, former Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, says the decision of the Ghana Football Association to dismiss Otto Addo as Black Stars head coach with less than three months to the World Cup is a good call.

“It is a good call. My concern now is ‘who are we employing?’

Let’s go for a top-notch coach. Let’s dedicate good money for top class coaches. [Any top class coach] available for 200,000 USD monthly and can get us results, let’s give it to him.

“There should be no nepotism appointment. We should get a World class coach,” Kwadwo Baah said in an interview with Asempa FM.

The decision follows the team’s poor performance in recent matches. Ghana lost 2-1 to Germany on Monday, March 30, 2026, just hours before the announcement. That loss came after another heavy defeat, where the team suffered a 5-1 loss to Austria on March 27, 2026.

Otto Addo was appointed as head coach on March 15, 2024. His appointment marked his return to the role after previously serving as interim coach.

He first led the team ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup play-off matches against Nigeria. However, he stepped down after Ghana’s poor performance at the tournament.
