Legendary Ghanaian actor William Addo, popularly known as Akpatse, has passed away.
He died peacefully on Saturday, November 22, 2025, following a long battle with illness. A source close to his family confirmed the death to 3Entertainment’s Joseph Worae. The Actors Guild has also confirmed his passing.
Health Struggles and Later Life
In his later years, William Addo faced serious health challenges. He suffered from glaucoma and cataracts, which eventually left him completely blind. He underwent multiple surgeries, beginning in 2016, but his vision continued to deteriorate, and doctors reportedly told him the condition was “incurable.”
Akpatse’s death has led to an outpouring of grief from the Ghanaian arts community and the general public. He leaves behind a legacy of memorable performances, leadership in cultural institutions, and a lasting impact through mentoring and training young actors.
Career
Akpatse was a major figure in Ghana’s theatre and television industry. He rose to fame through his roles on GTV’s Thursday Theatre, where his comic timing, wit, and presence made him a household name.
Beyond acting, William Addo held important leadership positions. He served as Director at the National Theatre and Director of Programmes at the National Commission on Culture. He was also passionate about academics, studying Drama and Theatre Studies at the University of Ghana before earning a master’s degree in Acting & Directing at the University of Leeds in the UK.
After returning to Ghana, he lectured at the Theatre Arts Department at the University of Ghana, mentoring many young actors and shaping the next generation of talent.
