Ghanaian Footballer’s Throat Slit During Match in Nigeria

The throat of a Ghanaian football player, Nana Abraham, was slit during a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match on Saturday, November 8, 2025.

According to multiple reports, Nana Abraham, who plays for Barau Football Club, was attacked and left with a deep cut on his neck during a tense game against Katsina United.

A report by Sahara Reporters stated that the Ghanaian player was assaulted by some Katsina United fans after violence erupted during the match. The incident reportedly occurred moments after Barau FC scored a 69th-minute equaliser, which made the score 1-1. The goal angered a section of the home fans, leading to a violent scene on the pitch.

Barau Football Club confirmed the attack in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) but did not disclose the condition of the injured player. The club wrote:
“70′ The match is temporarily halted following an attack on Barau FC player, Nana Abraham. Katsina United | 1-1 | Barau FC.”
The post was accompanied by a picture showing the Ghanaian footballer lying motionless on the field.

However, Nigerian journalist Israel Usulor later clarified that Nana Abraham was not dead, though he suffered a serious neck wound.
He wrote, “A serious wound was inflicted on his neck. The attacked player, Nana Abraham, did not die, but his condition is not completely clear yet. The match was temporarily stopped as officials battled to bring the situation under control. Another Barau FC player, Hillary Ekawu, replaced Nana Abraham, and the match continued moments later, ending 1-1.”

The NPFL has not yet issued an official statement on the attack. The incident has sparked outrage among football fans, with many calling for better security and stricter measures to protect players during matches.
