Ghanaian singer Moliy Ama Montgomery, famously known as Moliy made history on June 9, 2025, when she became the first Ghanaian artiste to perform at the BET Awards.
The event took place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, and her performance was nothing short of electrifying.
Moliy lit up the stage with her hit track “Shake It to the Max (FLY),” sharing the moment with her collaborator, Silent Addy, who joined her to pump up the crowd even more. Social media went wild with videos of her performance. Fans cheered and waved Ghanaian and Jamaican flags, while Moliy stunned everyone in a glowing golden-green outfit.
This BET stage moment came just weeks after Moliy wowed audiences at the 2025 Ghana Music Awards in Accra. Excited by her achievement, she posted a video on social media with the caption, “When you’re the first Ghanaian to perform at the BETs.”
For Ghanaian music, this is a major step forward onto the world stage.
The night also brought big wins for African music. Nigeria’s Ayra Starr took home the Best International Act award, becoming the only African winner of the night. It was her first BET Award, and she joins a powerful list of past winners like Burna Boy, Tems, and Tyla. She beat out several strong nominees, including Ghana’s Black Sherif, South Africa’s Tyla, and Swaziland’s Uncle Waffles.
Meanwhile, Kendrick Lamar out of 10 nominations, he won five awards, including Album of the Year for GNX. He also grabbed Best Male Hip Hop Artist, Video of the Year for “Not Like Us”, Best Collaboration with SZA for “Luther”, and Video Director of the Year (with Dave Free).
Other top winners included SZA (Best Female R&B/Pop Artist), Chris Brown (Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and Viewer’s Choice), and Doechii (Best Female Hip Hop Artist). Rising star Leon Thomas was named Best New Artist, while Blue Ivy Carter picked up the Young Stars Award.
