GHANET urges govt to activate HIV/AIDS Fund to support children born with HIV

The Ghana HIV and AIDS Network (GHANET) has called on the government to activate the National HIV/AIDS Fund to support children born with HIV.

While treatment and prevention have progressed, GHANET said the reduced public education has led to rising stigma, misinformation, and risky behaviour.

Data from the Ghana Health Service shows over 34,000 new HIV infections were recorded between January and September 2024.

Speaking to Citi News, the President of the Ghana HIV and AIDS Network (GHANET), Ernest Amoabeng Ortsin urged a renewed focus on awareness campaigns.

“For some time now, we have been advocating for the HIV and AIDS Fund. There is a law backing this fund. There is a Legislative Instrument that has everything prepared to establish this fund. But for some reason, there is some level of inertia on the part of the government to operationalise this fund.

“That is what I think all of us need to impress on the government to operationalise the fund so that we can get resources that will be able to take care of young people in this kind of situation,” he stated.
