Ghana’s gospel music community is mourning the death of Maame Tiwaa, a well-loved gospel singer known for her long partnership with Yaw Sarpong and the Asomafo Band.
She passed away in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, after a short illness. The exact cause of her death has not yet been confirmed.
Maame Tiwaa was admired for her soft, angelic voice and her strong presence in Ghanaian gospel music. She sang on many popular songs, including “Tenabea Foforo”, “Yen Nka Nkyere Yen Agya”, “Sumenaso”, and several other hits. After more than 40 years in the industry, she earned her first 3Music Awards nomination in 2021.
For decades, she stood beside Yaw Sarpong as the main female vocalist of the Asomafo group. Many fans remember her for bringing comfort and inspiration through her music.
Her last public performances were at the TGMA night, where she paid tribute to Yaw Sarpong, and at her son’s wedding. In recent months, she was also caring for Yaw Sarpong during his health challenges.
News of her passing has led to an outpouring of grief on social media, with many expressing sympathies for Yaw Sarpong and the entire gospel fraternity.
The family has not yet released an official statement or funeral details.
