President John Mahama has announced a GH¢20 million allocation to Ghana’s film industry as part of government’s renewed commitment to strengthening the country’s creative economy.
Delivering the State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Friday, February 27, the President revealed that the funds have been earmarked specifically to support the growth and development of the film sector.
“Government has allocated 20 million cedis to the film sector alone,” he stated.
According to President Mahama, the financial injection is intended to revitalise the industry by supporting production, capacity building, and distribution across major film hubs, including Kumawood and Ghallywood.
The move is expected to empower filmmakers, producers, directors, actors, and other stakeholders within the value chain.
Industry watchers say the allocation could help address longstanding challenges such as inadequate funding, limited access to modern production equipment, and distribution constraints that have affected the competitiveness of Ghanaian films.
The President’s announcement signals a broader effort by government to position the creative arts as a key driver of job creation and economic growth.
The GH¢20 million allocation marks one of the most significant direct financial commitments to Ghana’s film sector in recent years, raising expectations for a revival of the industry and stronger global visibility for Ghanaian storytelling.
