The Government of Ghana has initiated diplomatic requests to bring back into the country, a Russian national accused of secretly filming and publishing videos of his alleged sexual escapades with close to a hundred Ghanaian women, some of them married or in serious relationships.
The heavily-edited videos which fully captured the faces of the said women, have been published for commercial purposes on pay-per-view media platforms without the consent of the women involved.
The Government of Ghana insists the suspect, identified as Yaytseslav Trahovback, flouted the country’s laws and should face prosecution in the jurisdiction where the alleged crime was committed.
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, who disclosed this to the media over the weekend, said the Government is seeking the support of the Russian authorities to help extradite the suspect.
“We want the gentleman to come to Ghana, to be brought back to Ghana, extradited to Ghana, for him to face the full rigors of our law,” Samuel Nartey George stated.
Mr. George disclosed that he has already directed his Ministry to formally summon the Russian Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Sergei Berdnikov to discuss the matter. The Minister gave an assurance that the Ghana Government would involve Interpol to ensure the Russian is extradited.
“Yesterday, I caused the Ministry to send an invitation to the Russian Ambassador. I intend to see him this week and have a conversation with him. That gentleman will be looked for. We will activate every resource at our disposal; work with the Interpol like the way we have worked with Interpol to extradite Ghanaians to other jurisdictions, we will request the Russian authorities to work with our law enforcement”, Samuel Nartey George stated.
Try Him in Absentia
Mr. George made it clear that the government is prepared to prosecute the suspect even if extradition efforts prove unsuccessful, stating, “Whether we have the gentleman or not, I intend for us to file full prosecution, try him in absentia and get a judgment if he fails to show up. We will pursue this to its legal conclusion”.
Mr. George said it is a big crime in Ghana to record someone without the person’s consent.
“It is a crime to record a person without their consent. That’s the law of the land. Now you just don’t record it, but you go and post it on a website for financial gain.
“You cannot record a citizen without their consent and post that online. That constitutes a crime under the Cyber Security Authority Act (CSA) Act 1038. We are taking a very strong view of it.
He said the ministry is not interested in the moral judgment of the individuals involved but in the non-consequential sharing of the videos.
“What the cyber security is interested in, and my ministry is interested in, is not the moral judgment of the individuals. Is the non-consensual sharing of the videos that were posted online…that is a crime”?
He assured that Ghanaian citizen, in respect of their decision-making, will be protected by their government.
Ministry of Gender Condemns Act
The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has also condemned the alleged acts, describing them as a grave violation of dignity and privacy.
In a statement, the Ministry said that although preliminary information suggests the suspect may no longer be within Ghana’s jurisdiction, this does not diminish the seriousness of the allegations.
“The non-consensual recording and distribution of intimate images is a criminal offence and a clear violation of dignity and privacy,” the statement noted.
It added that the Ministry is working closely with the Ghana Police Service, other security agencies and international partners to explore all lawful avenues, including cross-border cooperation and mutual legal assistance.
Background
Videos recently surfaced on social media allegedly showing the Russian national luring Ghanaian women to his hotel room and engaging in sexual activities with them.
Reports indicate the suspect, who was in Ghana on holiday, secretly filmed the encounters and later uploaded the videos to his TikTok account.
He is alleged to have used AI-enabled glasses to record the encounters without the women’s knowledge. The videos reportedly involved several Ghanaian women, both married and unmarried.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many calling for his arrest and prosecution over alleged sexual exploitation and violation of privacy.
