Ghanaian gospel musician Great Ampong has issued an unreserved apology to Ghanaians and members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over a campaign song he previously released against the party.
Ahead of the December 7, 2024, elections, Ampong composed a song endorsing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. However, the lyrics contained controversial claims about former President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC, which sparked backlash from sections of the public.
In a video shared on X by Edhub on February 26, 2025, Ampong was seen using the Peace FM platform to publicly express regret over certain inappropriate lyrics that may have offended the NDC and some citizens. He extended his apology to Ghanaians, acknowledging that his words might have been hurtful.
“I’m happy to sincerely apologize from the bottom of my heart. I want to be at peace with God—that is what matters to me. Even if Ghanaians still criticize me, I know I have done the right thing. I want to take this opportunity to apologize to him. When I made the song, I did not mean to refer to him, but people later associated it with him. He should forgive me. I also want to apologize to Ghanaians,” he stated.
To further demonstrate his remorse, the musician has released a new song titled ‘Apology,’ urging unity among Ghanaians after the elections. He emphasized that politicians, regardless of their party affiliations, often prioritize their interests over those of the people and the country, despite making numerous promises during campaigns.
Ampong, a known supporter of the NPP, actively endorsed the party during the 2024 elections. His campaign song promoted Dr. Bawumia and his running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), praising the NPP’s achievements and encouraging Ghanaians to vote for them.
In several interviews, he denied allegations that he was paid by Dr. Bawumia to create the song, insisting that his endorsement was purely voluntary. He argued that the NPP had contributed more to Ghana’s development than the NDC.
However, after the elections, John Dramani Mahama and the NDC secured victory, leaving many NPP supporters uncertain about their political future.
Amid concerns about possible repercussions, Ampong has now sought to mend relations with President Mahama. In a recent interview, he explained that his lyrics were misinterpreted and taken out of context.
