Gunshots Over NPP Polls

An 11-year-old girl is in a critical condition after she was shot during an attack at the residence of Akyem-Akroso New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman in Oda in the Eastern Region.

The girl, yet to be identified, was part of five others who were caught in the shooting targeted at the constituency chairman Frank Anim Bediako by some supposed irate NPP youths.

Margaret Buabeng, 18, Appiagyei Maxwell 38, Faustina Amoako 52 have also been injured.

The constituency chairman explained the attack happened last Friday at about 4 p.m. while he was about to hold a meeting with about 40 polling station executives.

He said his residence was suddenly besieged by a crowd numbering than 400 men.

The mob, mainly NPP youths, attacked his residence on suspicion he was attempting to rig the process to elect polling station executives, a charge he has denied.

The constituency chairman explained that he had called for the meeting to discuss a public sensitization plan on an impending road construction.

He said the constituency executive members were to help, among other things, disseminate news of a bitumen road construction as one more sign that the government was keen in bringing development to the constituency.

Bediako is quoted as having stated that the meeting did not even start when the angray invaders started the onslaught at his residence.

The chairman  said they burnt worn-out car tyres smashed his glass windows and deflated his car tyres.

The NPP leader also said he heard sporadic gunshots but survived the attack.

The Police rushed to the scene, and with the support of a team of soldiers from Achiase Jungle Warfare School, managed to bring the situation under control.

The Oda Municipal Police Commander, Samuel Ntoso, who confirmed the incident said they are yet to make any arrest as tension remains high in the area.
