Guru Says Car Given To Miss UG 2025 Wasn’t Old

The former President of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Ghana, musician Guru, has responded to claims that the vehicle awarded to Miss UG 2025 was in poor condition.

The controversy arose after the reigning queen, Mariam Jasmine Saaka, complained that the car appeared “about 90 years” old.

A video circulating online, on November, 28, showed Guru addressing Jasmine’s remarks. He dismissed her criticism and suggested she should visit Manhyia Palace, where cars more than a century old are still maintained and driven.

He also questioned how many truly brand-new cars exist in Ghana, emphasizing that the most important thing was that the car worked when it was handed over.

“You say the car is old, that it’s 90 years old, but go to Manhyia Palace and you’ll find cars over 100 years old that are still in use. You said, ‘The car is not new; you promised me a brand-new car but gave me an old one,’ yet the car started when it was given to you,” Guru stated.

The disagreement began after Jasmine, who was crowned Miss University of Ghana 2025 in August, during the flagship pageant event organized by the 67th SRC administration led by Guru (Maradona Yeboah Adjei), publicly expressed disappointment with the state of the vehicle.

In a video shared on social media, she displayed the black Toyota Vitz and described it as riddled with faults. She said it was far from the “brand-new” condition promised before the pageant.

Jasmine claimed the car was completely immobile, forcing her to leave it parked and unused on campus. She pointed out multiple defects inside the vehicle, including loose fittings, detachable panels, a broken glove compartment, and missing grab handles. She said these issues were unacceptable for a car that was supposed to be new.

She also pointed out that key electronic features, including the central control and locking system, were not working, leaving the car insecure and with permanently shut windows.

Jasmine further revealed that another part of her prize, a promised trip to Dubai, has not been provided.
