GWCL Begins Mass Disconnection Exercise

Management of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) says it has begun an exercise to disconnect all customers indebted to the company.

The move is part of “a nationwide revenue mobilisation exercise to retrieve all arrears owed by customers”.

A statement issued by the the GWCL indicated that customers who fail to pay up their arrears will be disconnected from having access to water supply.

“As part of the exercise, disconnection teams have been set up in all the regions to disconnect on the spot all categories of customers whose bills are in arrears,” the release stated.

It threatened that disconnections carried out will not be restored until full payment of arrears is made, and appropriate reconnection fees paid.

“Again, we remind customers to endeavour to leave their payment receipts behind when leaving their homes to avoid wrongful disconnections.

“Customers who have paid via mobile money or other electronic means will have to show SMS payment receipts as proof of payment,” it said.

In addition to the exercise, the teams have been authorised to check illegal connections, self-reconnections and illegal use of in-line booster pumps at customers’ premises.

The release further disclosed that “persons found to be engaged in such criminal activities will be handed over to the police for prosecution”.
