Ghanaian actress Clara Benson, popularly known as Maame Serwaa, has opened up about the deep emotional pain she endured after losing her mother, Mrs. Rose Amoateng Benson.
Speaking on the Okukuseku show with Emelia Brobbey, the Kumawood star revealed that her mother’s death, coupled with damaging public accusations, nearly drove her into depression.
“It hasn’t been easy. I was very close to her. I remember my mum telling me she wouldn’t die until she had held her grandchildren. Everyone who knew me understood how inseparable we were,” she recalled.
Maame Serwaa was particularly hurt by rumors that falsely accused her of being responsible for her mother’s passing.
“I was devastated when I heard people say I had killed my mother or used her for something. If I were just an ordinary person, would they still say such things?” she questioned.
She revealed that the backlash severely affected her mental health, leading her to consider suicide multiple times.
“There were moments I looked at myself in the mirror and asked, ‘Am I a bad person?’ I attempted to harm myself several times. I felt like I had lost a part of me. The people around me even took my phone away to prevent me from seeing the hurtful things being said online,” she disclosed.
Maame Serwaa’s mother passed away on December 7, 2017, after a short illness. She was laid to rest on January 20, 2018, at Atwema Koforidua in the Ashanti Region.
