I am the unifying force NPP needs for 2028 victory – Kwabena Agyepong

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has declared his intention to contest the party’s presidential primaries, promising a clean, unifying leadership for the 2028 general elections.

His announcement, made on Tuesday (29 July) just hours after the NPP officially opened nominations, marks his return to frontline politics and adds momentum to what is shaping up to be a highly contested race for the party’s flagbearership.

Positioning himself as the antidote to internal division and elite-driven politics, Agyepong appealed directly to party delegates, urging them to look beyond financial inducements and back a campaign rooted in integrity.

“Politics belongs to the grassroots, belongs to the ordinary people. Not the petty scabble of contented partisan elites,” he said.

“Let us not weigh down this party any further with a choice that will eventually call for unending efforts of reconciliation, reparation from hate speeches. With me, KAA, the NPP has a clear path to unity and victory.”

“We need a pair of clean hands, a clear mind and a compassionate heart to lead our nation and the party. I, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, stand ready to work with you, ready to rebuild, ready to restore hope for our party and every Ghanaian”, he further declared.

Reconciliation

Agyepong also called on former Trade Minister and one-time presidential hopeful, Alan Kyerematen, to return to the NPP fold.

“This party was founded on sacrifice, not privilege,” he said, adding that unity is essential if the NPP is to reclaim power in 2028.

The declaration event was attended by several party faithful, including former MPs such as Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, now CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority.

Guidelines

Meanwhile, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong confirmed that nominations for the presidential primaries will close on 28 August. The party has scheduled the internal elections for 31 January 2026. Candidates are expected to pay a non-refundable nomination fee of GHC100,000, with a filing fee of GHC500,000.

Kodua also used the occasion to caution the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) against politicising the ongoing chieftaincy conflict in Bawku. He condemned what he described as “unfounded allegations” linking the NPP to violence in the run-up to the 2024 general elections.

The NPP’s flagbearer race is already attracting attention, with figures such as Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Kennedy Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, and former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia expected to contest.
