I Won’t Change My Coaching Style – Queiroz

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has defended his defensive approach, saying he will not abandon the football philosophy that has guided his 47-year coaching career.

The Portuguese coach made the comments at a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 21, 2026, ahead of Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia.

Queiroz was responding to questions about criticism of the style of football associated with his teams and whether he would consider changing his approach during his second spell as Black Stars coach.

The experienced coach said winning remains the main factor that determines a coach’s future rather than the style of football used.

“Have you seen any coach lose their job because of style of-play before?” Queiroz asked.

“Coaches lose their job because they don’t win, not because of their style.”

Queiroz, whose coaching career has lasted almost five decades, said he sees no reason to change the approach that has kept him in the profession for so long.

“There is one thing that has kept me in my job for 47 years and it’s not after 47 years that I’m coming to change my style,” he added.

The coach has returned to lead the Black Stars as Ghana looks to recover from the disappointment of missing the 2025 AFCON tournament.

His immediate focus is on the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, where Ghana will face Côte d’Ivoire away in Bouaké on September 24 before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium five days later.

The fixtures will be Queiroz’s first major tests as he begins his second spell in charge of the national team.
