Former Black Stars head coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor says he will support any opportunity for his two sons to play for Ghana at senior international level, although he admits it may be difficult to convince them.
In a recent interview with Graphic Sports, the former Ghana international described his younger son’s move to Belgium as an important milestone in his career, noting that it reflects steady growth and hard work in European football.
Despite his openness to seeing his sons wear the Black Stars jersey, Akonnor admitted that persuading them to represent Ghana may not be easy. He explained that both players were born and raised in Germany, where they have spent most of their lives.
“It’s difficult to convince them to come to Ghana because they grew up in Germany, but of course, if the need be or if the opportunity arises, we will be able to make that decision,” CK Akonnor said.
Akonnor made this known while speaking about the football progress of his sons, who are both developing their careers in Europe. His elder son, Jesaja Herrmann, recently completed a move to German lower-division side FC Bocholt. His younger son, Charles Kwablan Herrmann, has also taken a major step by joining Belgian Pro League club Cercle Brugge.
Akonnor further acknowledged that both Charles and Jesaja have already represented Germany at the youth level. They have featured for various German youth teams, including the U-16, U-17, U-19 and U-20 sides, which strengthens their ties to the European nation.
His comments come at a time when Ghana continues to track and engage dual-nationality players across Europe as part of efforts to strengthen the Black Stars squad ahead of future international competitions.
The Ghana Football Association has in recent years increased its focus on players in the diaspora, hoping to attract eligible talents who can add depth and quality to the national team.
