Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has given a cash reward of GH¢10,000 to Asante Kotoko after their impressive 2-1 comeback win over rivals Accra Hearts of Oak in the 2025 President’s Cup.
The exciting match took place on Sunday, July 6, 2025 at the Accra Sports Stadium, drawing thousands of fans to witness the historic clash.
Hearts of Oak took the lead in the first half through Hamza Issah, who scored after a mistake by Kotoko goalkeeper Mohammed Camara. The Phobians dominated the opening half, especially through the efforts of Mawuli Wayo, who troubled Kotoko’s defence.
However, the second half saw a complete turnaround. Kotoko came back stronger, showing determination and teamwork. Peter Amidu Acquah scored a beautiful solo goal in the 53rd minute to equalise. Shortly after, Kwame Opoku finished off a pass from Albert Amoah to put Kotoko ahead.
The turning point came late in the game when Kotoko goalkeeper Camara, who had earlier made a costly error, saved a penalty from Hearts’ Abdul Aziz. This save helped Kotoko maintain their lead and win the trophy, marking their ninth President’s Cup title.
After the game, Minister Kofi Adams visited the Kotoko team at their hotel. In a brief ceremony, he handed over GH¢10,000 to the team’s captain, Gilbani Samba.
“For your drive back, I’m giving you GH¢10,000. When you get there, you can buy some water,” he said humorously, adding, “Our target is the continental level, and we will support you.”
Adams told reporters the money was not just a reward but also a sign of encouragement for the team. “Kotoko’s performance showed the fighting spirit we need to take Ghanaian football to the continental stage,” he said.
President John Dramani Mahama, together with other dignitaries such as Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene and Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo, joined Adams in presenting the trophy to Kotoko captain Samba in front of cheering fans.
