Kofi Adams Wants Ghana, Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire To Co-Host World Cup

Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, says Ghana has what it takes to co-host the FIFA World Cup with Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire in the future.

He is urging the government to start considering this possibility, especially now that FIFA has opened the door for several countries to jointly host the tournament.

In recent years, FIFA has shown strong support for multi-nation hosting. The United States, Mexico and Canada will host the 2026 World Cup together, while Morocco, Spain and Portugal will share hosting duties for the 2030 edition. Adams believes West Africa can also follow this path.

“They (FIFA) are beginning to adopt a number of nations doing it so maybe who knows, the next one would be Ghana, Nigeria, and then Côte d’Ivoire coming together to also host the World Cup and it will be good,” he said.

Adams explained that all three countries have already made major investments in sports facilities. He pointed out that Côte d’Ivoire recently hosted the Africa Cup of Nations, showing its readiness for major tournaments.

“I believe that we, together with Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, who have already invested quite a lot because they hosted AFCON not too long ago. We can also ask for that right,” he added.

He believes a joint bid is realistic as Ghana continues to upgrade its stadiums and other infrastructure. Adams is confident that with continued development, the three countries can make a strong case to FIFA.

“Who knows? The next would-be Ghana, Nigeria and Cote D’Ivoire coming together to also host the world and it would be good.”

“With the level of infrastructure His Excellency John Dramani Mahama wants us to do, I believe that we together with Nigeria and Cote D’Ivoire… we can also ask for that right (to host the World Cup),” he said.

Ghana last hosted a major competition in 2024 during the delayed 2023 African Games, while Côte d’Ivoire staged the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
