Ghanaian rapper Kwaw Kese has revealed that he plans to refund donations collected for fellow musician Kwesi Arthur.
A few weeks ago, Kwaw Kese set up a GoFundMe account to help Kwesi Arthur after the latter shared on social media that his former management was demanding $150,000 for using his own images. The gesture, however, was met with surprise, as Kwesi Arthur posted that he knew nothing about the fundraiser and asked the public to disregard it.
Speaking to Kwame Dadzie and Doreen Avio on Hitz FM’s morning show Daybreak Hitz, Kwaw Kese said he was disappointed by Kwesi Arthur’s reaction.
“Considering the huge following I and Kwesi have, I thought I could use that to raise money for him to pay off his debt to his former management company Ground Up Chale,” he explained.
Kwaw said his intention was purely to help. “I set up the GoFundMe account and if it was a bad thing I wouldn’t even talk about it. I came online and posted the GoFundMe account and said people should support our brother, pay the money so that Kwesi Arthur can have his freedom,” he said.
He emphasized that he had no intention of keeping the funds for himself. “I was doing it strictly for Kwesi Arthur and was pained that someone could own his images and they want you to pay $150,000 dollars. You are bigger than that amount of money. Let’s do this, pay the guy off so you can be free,” he added.
Kwaw Kese revealed that the campaign raised $170 and said he would let GoFundMe refund the contributions. “The $170 dollars is still in the account. They have given me a deadline to withdraw it or they refund to the donors,” he said.
He further explained that, given the backlash he received for creating the account, allowing GoFundMe to refund the money was the best way forward.
