Mahama endorses COVID-19 vaccines

Ghana’s former President John Dramani Mahama, on Tuesday, said the AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19 are very safe and encouraged Ghanaians to avail themselves to be vaccinated without any doubts or fears whatsoever.

John Mahama made the call after he went with his dear wife, Lordina, to get vaccinated against COVID-19 in the full glare of the public.

John Mahama and Lordina were at the Police Hospital in Accra where they were injected with the AstraZeneca vaccine and given their COVID Cards.

“Lordina and I this morning took our COVID-19 vaccine at the Police Hospital in Accra. I agreed to take the vaccine publicly, to encourage and assure all Ghanaians that the vaccines are safe. As a former Ambassador for the GAVI Alliance, I can confidently say that vaccines are useful in preserving our health. Ghanaians must therefore disregard all the rumours about the vaccine.

“Let’s continue to #StaySafe, #maskup and wash our hands regularly to help stop the spread of COVID-19”, John Mahama noted on his facebook page after his jab taking encounter.

The GAVI Alliance of which John Maham alluded to is a an international organisation – a global Vaccine Alliance, that galvanizes the energies of both  public and private sectors with the shared goal of creating equal access to new and underused vaccines for children living in the world’s poorest countries.

A day earlier, President Akufo-Addo with his wife Rebecca and Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia with his wife Semira had also taken the jabs in public.

Akufo-Addo became the first person to have taken the jab in Ghana after which he said “I decided to take it public to clear all doubts and urge everyone to also accept the vaccine…So everybody in Ghana should feel comfortable about taking the vaccine. It is important that everybody at the end of the day is vaccinated. That is our objective”

Dr. Bawumia, after his jab also noted: “We are taking this vaccine today to assure the public and Ghanaians in general that it is safe to be immunized, to take this vaccine.”

A section of Ghanaian have expressed skepticism about the safety of the AstraZeneca vaccine and hinted their reluctance in going for the jab.
