Member of Parliament (MP) for the Techiman South Constituency, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, has petitioned Parliament to intervene and halt what he describes as continuous reckless security breaches that puts the safety of the country’s President, John Dramani Mahama at a high risk.
“Just last Thursday, the President again is seen being driven in a vehicle by his brother Ibrahim Mahama on an official visit to the Volta Region to commiserate with victims of a sea erosion community. Where the President was’s officially assigned driver? Has the President’s brother been trained and cleared specifically on all the safety measures to be undertaken to drive the President in a convoy? One would have thought that given the experience of this President, such gaffes would have been avoided”, the Techiman South MP noted.
The MP said President John Mahama is on record to have undertaken foreign travels by the use of a privately owned aeroplane of his brother Ibrahim Mahama at a time that the State had not authorized same and the safety condition of the aircraft could not be vouched for.
“This happened when the state owned aircraft serviced and maintained by the state and reserved for the use by the President was available for his use. This has happened a number of times,” Adjei Mensah Korsah added.
The Techiman South MP expressed worry the trend if not checked for the right security protocols to be ensured, could pose a huge risk to the security and safety of the President.
“The earlier we act, the better before a calamity befalls this country out of these recklessness and it is important Parliament’s attention is drawn on this worrying development to avert a national disaster.
“There are other people who have also questioned the motivation of the president’s brother to ‘bear all such costs’ in on the president incidental to his duties and also at what cost that would be to the Ghanaian taxpayers but more importantly to me is security and safety than cost”, Adjei Mensah Korsah added.
