A man captured on a viral video assaulting a midwife at the Community 22 Polyclinic in Tema has been slapped with a court fine and ordered to pay compensation to his victim.
Desmond Bosomtwe was convicted by the Community 22 District Court and fined 100 penalty units for attacking senior staff midwife Priscilla Addo while she was on duty.
The court also ordered him to pay GHS 5,000 in compensation to the nurse and barred him from entering Community 22 Polyclinic for the next 12 months. Bosomtwe was further required to sign a bond of good behaviour.
The ruling follows a disturbing incident on June 2, 2026, when Nurse Addo approached visitors at the ward and informed them that official visiting hours had ended. She asked them to leave in accordance with hospital regulations aimed at ensuring a peaceful environment for recovering patients.
But Bosomtwe, who was visiting a relative, allegedly refused to comply. What began as a verbal disagreement quickly turned ugly, ending in an assault that was caught on camera and widely shared on social media, sparking public outrage.
Reacting to the judgment, Deputy National PRO of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Philemon Gyapong, said the association welcomed the swift action by the judiciary but had hoped for a harsher punishment.
“He was made to sign a bond of good behaviour and pay GHS 5,000 compensation to the midwife. The judiciary acted promptly, which is what we expected,” he said.
“We had hoped he would receive a stiffer punishment to serve as a deterrent to others. However, that is what the law provides, and we accept it.”
The case has renewed concerns about the safety of healthcare workers, with many calling for stronger measures to protect nurses and midwives from abuse while performing their duties.
