Man drowns in river Offin

CALAMITY STRUCK when a man, who was crossing the River Offin with a canoe in Atumtuma in the Ashanti Region got drowned after the canoe suddenly capsized.

The deceased has since been found and identified by the Nkawie Divisional Police in the Ashanti Region as Kwaku Ekow, whose exact age was readily known by the police.

According to the police, the now deceased man was crossing the Offin River to Atumtuma around 1:30pm on June 19, 2025 when the canoe turned upside down in a dangerous manner.

Some Good Samaritans around, some of whom were expert swimmers, quickly dived deep into the river Offin to help save the life of Kwaku Ekow, who was in danger at the time.

After some minutes of wild search in the river, which had overflowed its banks at the time, Kwaku Ekow’s body was eventually found but he had already given up the ghost.

“On 19/06/2025, at about 1:30 pm, the unit committee chairman of Achiase-Atumtuma Electoral area, Prince Barnie, called at Adobewura charge office and reported that one Kwaku Ekow, age unknown, was on board a canoe crossing the offin river at Atumtuma.

“In the process, the canoe capsized, and he fell into the river and got drowned. That a search party was engaged to search for him, and he was shortly retrieved from the river dead”, the police report said.

According to the Nkawie Divisional Police statements police were informed about the sad incident but when they (police) arrived at the scene, Kwaku Ekow’s lifeless body had been retrieved from the river.

“Police proceeded to the scene, and the body of the deceased was seen lying at the bank of the river. The body was photographed and conveyed to community mortuary, Nyinahin, for preservation and autopsy”, the report said.
