Men must play active role in breast cancer awareness
Tema East MP Isaac Ashai Odamtten has urged men to take a more active role in breast cancer awareness by encouraging women to recognise unusual breast changes and seek medical attention early.
According to him, breast cancer should not be treated solely as a women’s health issue, as its effects extend to husbands, children, families, workplaces and communities.
Mr Odamtten made the call at the launch of Breast Cancer Awareness Month by the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH), where he advocated for breast health education to become part of everyday conversations rather than being confined to activities held in October.
He urged husbands and partners to support women in paying attention to their breast health and seeking professional advice when they notice unusual changes, including lumps, changes in breast size or appearance, skin changes and abnormal nipple discharge.
The MP also called for increased public education to tackle fear, stigma and misinformation, which he said could discourage people from seeking timely medical care or lead them to rely on unverified treatments.
He stressed that breast cancer awareness should extend beyond hospitals to homes, churches, mosques, schools, workplaces and other community settings to encourage early detection and timely treatment.
Mr Odamtten further announced his commitment to fully sponsor this year’s Manhean Breast Cancer Month as part of his contribution to awareness and prevention efforts.
He commended IMaH and its partners for initiating the campaign and urged Ghanaians to move beyond simply wearing the pink ribbon by taking practical steps to promote breast health and early detection.
