Mining Pit Traps Illegal Miners…One Declared Dead

ONE PERSON has been declared dead after a mining pit caved in on some suspected illegal miners at Kunsu, in the Ahafo Ano District in the Ashanti region.

The deceased, a male, was only identified by eye witnesses as 28-years old Usif.

According to residents, Usif and four other people were in the pit digging for gold in the afternoon of Saturday, February, 3, 2018, when the pit suddenly caved in and trapped them.

Some Good Samaritans quickly embarked on a rescue mission and, after several hours of digging, managed to rescue and rush the weak-looking ‘galamsayers’ to the hospital, but unfortunately, Usif, whose entire body was covered with mud, had given up the ghost before the rescuers could reach him.

Sources in the area told the paper that the case had since been reported to the police in the community.

The President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has banned illegal mining in the country, it would be recalled.

Bus since the ban, there have been reports of mining pits caving in and killing illegal miners in some parts of the country, especially the Ashanti region.

The latest incident clearly indicates that some illegal miners are bent on defying the president’s order against mining for gold without proper authorization.
