THE UNBELIEVABLE has happened in Konongo, in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality, where 10 illegal miners, have survived after being trapped in a deep mining for three days.
The miners had reportedly sneaked into the concession of Northern Mines Limited at Konongo and they were prospecting for gold when the pit caved in and trapped them last Wednesday.
A search team, made up NADMO and other members, instantly started to find ways to save the trapped miners from the jaws of death but all their hard work on Wednesday and Thursday failed.
On Friday, which was the third day, when all hope of saving the trapped miners was fading, a miracle happened when a breakthrough was found and the 10 miners were saved against all odds.
The rescued miners were then rushed to a nearby medical facility in Konongo where medical personnel thoroughly treated them, turning fears and anxiety in Konongo into instant joy and ecstasy.
Mr. Joseph Lanbon, the Asante-Akyem Central Director of NADMO, who was beaming with smiles after the rescue operation, told journalists that the rescue team had done a yeoman’s job at the accident scene.
“The rescue operation was difficult due to the depth of the pit but the rescuers were very determined and they eventually managed to save all the ten souls after three days of intensive digging and searching”.
He said initially it seemed the search operation would not yield the desired results considering that the pit was very deep, but the rescuers gave their all and in the end they saved all the ten trapped miners.
