The Member of Parliament for the Ho West constituency in the Volta region, Emmanuel Bedzrah has challenged students to in the country to take their studies seriously in their quest to become useful to themselves, their families and the nation at large.

Addressing members of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) club of the Kpeve Senior High School in Parliament during a visit, the MP urged the students to eschew laziness, indiscipline and embrace the tenets of obedience, respect, studiousness and Godliness at all times as future leaders of Ghana.

These, according to him, are the only panacea to enable them achieve their life goals as Parliamentarians, teachers, Doctors, Engineers among others.

Mr. Bedzrah educated the students on the three cardinal functions of Parliament including representational function, lawmaking, and executive oversight responsibilities.

He explained that Members of Parliament serve as elected representative of their constituents since it is not possible for all Ghanaians cannot be in Parliament at the same time.

Apart from making laws to govern effective running of the country, Parliament also exercises an oversight responsibility over the executive arm of government to ensure the public purse is protected for the taxpayer.

The Executive is mandated to seek Parliamentary approval before any fund from the national accounts, contracts and agreements are disbursed or entered into on behalf of citizens.

The students expressed satisfaction about the visit and the exposure by the MP which they said has deepened their understanding of the legislature.

The NCCE Clubs are aimed at equipping students with the requisite knowledge about their civic responsibilities and to live good social lives.

The Clubs are expected to instill ideals such as patriotism, communal spirit and the need for peaceful coexistence in the youth to better influence society.
