N/R: Aggrieved NPP Aspirants Demand Elections

Some aggrieved members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tatali Sanguli constituency of the Northern region are calling on the party’s hierarchy to cancel the decision taken by the constituency elections committee and some regional executive committee members to maintain the old executives through a referendum.

The aggrieved individuals said they were aspirants vying to contest for various constituency portfolios but were denied the opportunity to serve the party.

The group, in a press conference said some political figures are undermining the democratic credentials of the party.

According to Isaac Gmaye Tangben who addressed the media, the Northern Regional Executive Committee assured them that, there would be elections in the area.

“We aspirants were asked to meet the elections committee chairman, the DCE and the constituency research officer for the modalities regarding the forms and purchasing of forms only to be told that, the constituency chairman threatened to shed blood if he attempts to sell the forms,” he stated.

He alleged that, the Northern Regional Chairman, Bugri Naabu embarrassed them when they were subsequently referred to the regional level to purchase the forms to contest for the elections.

He said they pleaded for their rights to be respected but the executives deny them.

Meanwhile, the Constituency Chairman, Mr Kwasi Npong, has refuted the allegations and stated emphatically that during the NPP annual delegates conference, it was resolved that, they were not going to hold elections in the area.

He argued that, this resolution was submitted to the regional and national leadership of the party. He further disclosed that, as a result of the resolution, the party didn’t hold polling station and electoral area elections in the constituency.

However, he indicated they were obliged to organise a referendum for the delegates to confirm the executives as the new executives to run the affairs of the party for the next four years. He urged the group to allow peace to prevail in the area.
