Nigeria Fails To Qualify To 2026 World Cup

The Democratic Republic of Congo have defeated the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Africa playoff final at the Stade Prince Moulay Hassan in Rabat, Morocco.

DR Congo came into the match as the underdogs but shocked many by winning 4-3 on penalties after a tough and balanced game.

Nigeria started the match strongly and took an early lead through “Frank Onyeka” in the 3rd minute. The Super Eagles controlled the early moments with confidence and quick attacking play. However, DR Congo slowly grew into the game and equalised in the 32nd minute when “Meschack Elia” scored from close range to make it 1-1 by halftime.

In the second half, DR Congo played with high energy and pressed the Super Eagles. They created several chances and had two shots on target, but goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made important saves to keep Nigeria in the game. Neither team could score again, forcing the match into extra time and eventually penalties.

The penalty shootout favoured DR Congo. Their goalkeeper “Timothy Fayulu”, who was brought on in the final minutes of extra time, became the hero.

He made two crucial saves that helped his team secure victory. For Nigeria, “Calvin Bassey”, “Frank Onyeka”, and “Semi Ajayi” all missed their penalty kicks. DR Congo scored through “Noah Sadiki”, “Fiston Mayele”, “Michel-Ange Balikwisha” and captain “Chancel Mbemba” to seal the win.

With this result, the Leopards have qualified for the inter-continental playoff set for March 2026 as they aim to return to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since the 1974 tournament in West Germany. For Nigeria, the loss means their World Cup journey has ended, and they will miss the global tournament for the second time in a row.
