Nigerian Gospel Singer’s Husband Sentenced to Death

The news of Peter Nwachukwu’s death sentence for the murder of his wife, popular Nigerian gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, has triggered strong reactions among Ghanaians and others across social media.

On Monday, April 28, 2025, a Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigeria, found Nwachukwu guilty of killing his wife and sentenced him to death by hanging.

Justice Nwosu-Iheme ruled that the prosecution had provided enough evidence to prove the case of culpable homicide.

The verdict comes three years after Osinachi’s tragic death on April 8, 2022. Nwachukwu had faced a 23-count charge including spousal battery, cruelty to children, and criminal intimidation. The Nigerian government, through the Attorney-General’s office, led the prosecution.

During the trial, 17 witnesses, including two of Osinachi’s children, testified against Nwachukwu. Twenty-five documents were also presented as evidence. Nwachukwu, who testified in his defence, brought four witnesses and submitted four documents to support his case.

Before the sentencing, his lawyer pleaded for mercy. However, the prosecutor insisted that justice must be served.

The court handed down additional punishments alongside the death sentence: two years in prison for several assault-related charges, six months and three years for other offences and Fines of ₦500,000 and ₦200,000 for specific charges

The sentence has sparked a wave of emotional reactions in Ghana, with many praising the Nigerian court for standing firm in delivering justice for Osinachi.

The ruling has stirred emotional responses across social media in Ghana and beyond, with many users praising the Nigerian judiciary for delivering justice in a case that had drawn widespread outrage. Social media users have described the ruling as a bold message against domestic violence and a victory for victims who suffer in silence.
