The occasion was the NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference 2025, held in Kumasi. Mr Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, an Economist and former Minister of Energy, is respected for his deep understanding of the history and ideology of the NPP and its antecedents, such as the United Party.
He is viewed by many in the NPP as an ideal candidate for the National Chairman position. So it did not come as a surprise when the chairmen ambushed him with their wish to see him lead Ghana’s main opposition party as its national chairman.
Boakye Agyarko first contested for the flagbearership slot in 2007 for the 2008 presidential race. The National Council of the NPP last week fixed its presidential primaries for 31 January 2026.
Mr Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, while addressing the constituency chairmen of the NPP drawn from all the 16 regions ,one of the chairmen interrupted him and openly announced that the party was at the crossroads and to that end, needed an experienced man like him to lead it at the national level.
The announcement was greeted by spontaneous and simultaneous approval by the gathering. The constituency chairmen were head altogether shouting, “National Chairman! National Chairman!”
What triggered the spontaneous endorsement was the announcement from one of the NPP chairperson that “The situation we are in right now, we need an experienced person to lead this party.
“If you can join your faith with mine, we must plead with this man [Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko] to contest as the national chairman,” the speaker said.
If Mr Boakye Agyarko heeds to the call of the NPP grassroot members to contest the position of national chairman of the party, that challenge if taken on by the campaign manager for the NPP presidential race in 2012, Boakye Agyarko, will mean at least a fierce three-way contest.
Mr John Boadu, former General Secretary of the NPP and Benard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP have both announced their respective interest for the NPP chairmanship slot.
Both John Boadu and Chairman Wontumi were present at this meeting, where Boakye Agyarko received this overwhelming endorsement to contest the NPP national championship elections.
It is not clear if the endorsement of Boakye Agyarko will force John Boadu and Chairman Wontumi to suspend their ambitions to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
