NPP Gurus Want VC Sacked

Some top members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have called for the immediate removal of the KNUST Vice Chancellor, blaming him for the riots that happened at the university campus.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, has called on the Vice Chancellor (VC) to resign or be booted out.

He laid the blame for the confusion and chaotic scenes that led to the massive destruction of property at the university at the doorstep of the VC.

The NPP chairman, popularly known as ‘Wontumi’, insisted that the KNUST VC should solely be blamed for the chaotic scenes that occurred at the university.

“He should be blamed and I suggest that the KNUST VC, Prof. Obiri-Boahen, should be sacked or resign for failing to deliver on his mandate”, he said on Nhyira FM.

According to him, it is totally wrong for the students to take the law into their hands, but opined that the students wouldn’t have lost their temper had Prof. Obiri-Danso done the right thing.

Nana B Call

Commenting on the issue on social media site Facebook, the governing party’s National Youth Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly referred to as Nana B said the end of the KNUST Vice Chancellor was near, presumably over his handling of the several concerns raised by the students early on.

Nana B in registering his displeasure at the situation posted, “I am very confident that Prof Obiri Danso will soon be history very very soon.”

Afenyo-Markin’s View

Member of Parliament for Efutu constituency, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has also blamed Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso and the school’s authorities for the incident that occurred on the campus Monday.

According to the Efutu MP, the strict rules and policies implemented by the Vice Chancellor (VC) is the root cause of the student’s demonstration which resulted in vandalism.

Though condemning the students for vandalizing properties on campus, he said on Peace FM, accra based radio station that the VC and the University authorities should bow their heads in shame as the incident was avoidable if only they had sat to jaw-jaw with the students.

He wondered why Prof Obiri-Danso appeared to have grown wings that he wouldn’t grant audience with stakeholders including the Sector Minister till the situation had to aggravate.

“What has happened at Tech (KNUST) is a shame . . . Now the Minister that you wouldn’t want to sit with him is going to order you to do what is needful. So, your absolute power after all is not absolute. VC of Tech, after all, your absolute power is not absolute! You forgot that to a certain extent, the State has a responsibility to protect; so, the State will intervene,” he stated.
