NPP Wasting Our Time With LGBT Issues – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has said discussing LGBT related matters when there are pressing economic challenges, such as food scarcity and employment to be discussed is a complete waste of the country’s time.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of intentionally raising the topic of LGBT just to waste the country’s time.

“This is not a major issue. It’s another waste of time. You know, NPP, they specialise in wasting the time of everybody… When Ghanaians wake up in the morning, their focus is on how to get to work, how to earn a salary, and how to make ends meet. Is that bill the number one priority of every Ghanaian? It is not. It has no meaning,” Felix Kwakye Ofosu noted when he spoke The Pulse on Tuesday, April 7, 2026

He said the John Mahama led administration and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) does not owe any one any apology over how the President has handled LGBT topics, post his December 2024 electoral victory.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu described the focus on LGBTQ+ issues as a deliberate distraction, arguing that they are not a priority for ordinary Ghanaians. He claims the push to debate such matters ignores pressing economic challenges, such as food scarcity and employment.

The Government Spokesperson was responding to calls by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on President John Dramani Mahama to issue a formal apology to Ghanaians and religious institutions for not fulfilling a key campaign promise on LGBTQ-related legislation, after the President recently stated that the anti- LGBTQ bill is no longer the country’s most pressing priority.

At a press conference at the NPP headquarters on April 7, 2026, Member of Parliament for Assin South, John Ntim Fordjour, stressed that campaign promises must be honoured regardless of political transitions.

“Ghana’s basic needs have not changed since 2024, and so the president is therefore expected to fulfil his promise to introduce a government-sponsored bill, which he promised the clergy and the religious leaders, to comprehensively address LGBTQ issues if made president. He willingly made those promises, and he must be held to account and be made to fulfil his promises.

An apology to the clergies, to the Imams and traditional leaders. The NDC and the President John Dramani Mahama must apologise to the Christian Council, Catholic Bishops’ Conference, GPCC, and all other economical bodies, traditional rulers and concern CSOs for the double standards demonstrated between the period in opposition and now in power,” Fordjour said.

Fordjour also raised concerns about attempts to introduce LGBTQ concepts into the Constitution through the ongoing constitutional review process, highlighting recommendations on pages 107 and 108 of the report.

“These recommendations, if adopted, could open the door for the recognition of LGBTQ concepts within our constitutional framework. This is not just a legal matter; it is an issue that goes to the heart of our values as a nation. Embedding such provisions in the Constitution will have far-reaching consequences for our moral and cultural identity,” he said.

The NPP Minority is demanding an apology from President Mahama and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to Ghana’s religious and traditional leaders, arguing that assurances given on prioritizing the anti-LGBT bill have not been honoured.

“We were made to understand that this bill would be treated as a priority if they came into office. What we are seeing now is a clear shift, and it amounts to a betrayal of the trust reposed in them by religious and traditional leaders,” Fordjour added.

Echoing these concerns, the founder and leader of the Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro also turned up the pressure on President John Dramani Mahama, to prioritise anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, criticizing delays in fulfilling campaign promises and warning that Ghana will never accept LGBTQ+ activities

In a video posted on X, it was clearly seen that Prophet Kofi Oduro who spoke during one of his church services, on April 5, 2026 urged the government to uphold anti-LGBTQ+ measures. The preacher said he has consistently opposed LGBTQ+ practices even before the current administration assumed office.

“Four weeks ago, at Alabaster City at the F5 service, I looked in the camera and told the Jubilee House even before our president went on his trip, and I said no matter who is in government, LGBTQ+ will never be accepted in our country. I don’t care who is in the Jubilee House,” Prophet Oduro said.

Prophet Oduro emphasized that opposing LGBTQ+ activities remains a top priority for him and his ministry. He warned that they would take action if necessary.

“Your excellency, I just want to remind you. Sir, it was a priority then, and it’s a priority now. It’s a priority, your excellency. If we need to march to the Jubilee House, we will march. If we need to scream, we will scream. If we need to yell, we will yell. Sin is sin. Righteousness is righteousness. Disorder is disorder. Evil is evil. Abomination is abomination,” he said.

The outspoken preacher also referenced the period under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, stressing that he has maintained his position regardless of political changes.

“That particular bill, during His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, we screamed on this altar, and we told the Jubilee House, Ghana will never be an LGBTQ+ nation, and I’m saying to you, your excellency [John Dramani Mahama] with all honour, respect, but without fear, or favour, or intimidation, we will never accept LGBT. Never!” he declared.

“I defend the God of the Bible and his word. I would die for this cause, your excellency. You will stand for truth and integrity. It’s not a priority? With all due respect, sir, it was in your campaign message. Me, the reason I voted for you is the Anti-LGBTQ+ that you assured you will pass legislation on,” he added.
