Nsawam Assembly Secures Prisons Land for 24-Hour Economy Market Project

The Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly has taken a major step toward the realization of its flagship 24-Hour Economy Market project after officially receiving a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) from the Ghana Prisons Service for the release of a portion of prison land for the development.

The Assembly received its copy of the agreement on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, during a brief ceremony in Nsawam. The document was presented on behalf of the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, by the Commander of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Patrick Thomas Seidu.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Hon. Philibert Fummey Amenorpe, together with the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Jasper Adenyo, officially received the signed agreement, which paves the way for the Assembly to commence the development of the proposed 24-Hour Economy Market.

Although the MoU was formally signed on June 30, 2026, the presentation of the executed document marks the completion of the legal process required for the Assembly to take possession of the designated land and proceed with implementation of the project.

According to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Philibert Fummey in a Facebook post, the agreement represents a significant milestone in the municipality’s efforts to promote economic transformation, create employment opportunities and improve livelihoods through strategic infrastructure development.

The proposed 24-Hour Economy Market is expected to become a vibrant commercial hub that will provide a modern trading environment for farmers, traders, artisans and small and medium-sized enterprises. It is also expected to strengthen local commerce, stimulate investment and support the government’s broader 24-hour economy agenda.

Municipal authorities believe the project will not only expand business opportunities within the municipality but also attract traders and investors from surrounding communities, thereby boosting economic activity across the Eastern Region.

Speaking after receiving the document, the Assembly expressed appreciation to the Ghana Prisons Service for its cooperation and commitment throughout the process. Officials described the collaboration as an example of effective inter-agency partnership aimed at advancing national development objectives.

The Assembly further expressed optimism that construction of the market would begin as soon as possible, leading to the timely completion of what it described as a transformative project for the municipality.

Hon. Philibert Fummey, reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring the successful execution of the project, noting that the market is expected to serve as a catalyst for sustainable economic growth, job creation and improved socio-economic conditions for residents of Nsawam Adoagyiri and neighboring communities.
