THE ASANTEHENE, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has sternly warned chiefs in his kingdom to live upright lifestyles that will bring glory and transformation to Asanteman, else he will destool them.
The monarch issued the strong caution when he destooled the Mpasaaso Number 2 Chief, Nana Amofa Twumasi II, who was found guilty of gross misconduct when he appeared before Otumfuo on Monday.
The sins of the beleaguered chief, who has reigned for 41 years, included engaging in illegal mining also known as ‘Galamsey’ to enrich himself and destroy the environment and not being a proper royal to occupy the stool.
Scores of Mpasaaso Number 2 residents, including some members from the royal family, who besieged the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, appealed to the Asantehene to destool their chief with immediate effect.
According to the irate people, they have had enough of Nana Amofa Twumasi’s poor leadership style so they begged the Asantehene to festoon King to listen to their cry and give them a new traditional leader.
Otumfuo, who is noted for being a fair and just traditional leader, dis not immediately crack the crack the whip on the Mpasaaso Number 2 chief. He rather asked the chief to respond to the allegations.
Drama then unfolded at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, as Nana Amofa Twumasi II, went on his knees and passionately pleaded with the Asantehene to spare him, promising to do the proper thing henceforth.
Otumfuo, announcing his verdict, said Nana Amofa Twumasi II was not fit to occupy the Mpasaaso Number 2 stool again and call himself a chief, warning that chiefs under him will suffer similar fate if they misbehaved.
