Parliament to Conclude Report on Goldfields by End of March

Chairman of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi has told Citi Business News the committee will present its report findings on Goldfields to Parliament before it goes on recess.

According to him, the committee has engaged the various stakeholders and is in the process of wrapping up their findings to be presented before the House.

“Mr. Speaker made a referral to the committee to look at it and report to the plenary. The committee has sat several times on this issue. We have engaged the mine workers’ union executives. We have also engaged the management of Ghana Goldfields Limited. We invited the Lands and Natural Resources Minister because all these activities are within the purview of the ministry. We even went to the extent of inviting the Minerals Commission which is the regulatory authority and we are dealing with all these issues,” he assured.

The Ghana Mine Workers’ union embarked on a demonstration over the termination of the contracts of some workers at the Tarkwa mine of Goldfields Ghana Limited.

The union argued that about 1,500 workers will lose their jobs if the company is allowed to switch from owner mining to contract mining.

But Mr. Gyamfi assures that Parliament will address the issue soon.

“We have gotten enough information on this. What is left is for us to put our report together. I wish this will be done before Parliament goes on recess on the 23rd of this month. So we are working hard on it” he said.
