Perseus Mining pays Ghana $35m dividend, up from $5m

The Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced that Ghana has received a $35 million dividend from Perseus Mining (Ghana) Limited, representing a significant increase from the $5 million paid to the state last year.

The payment, equivalent to GH¢391.2 million, reflects what the Minister described as the mining company’s improved profitability.

Ato Forson said the government was committed to ensuring that the State receives a fairer share of the country’s mineral wealth.

“Ghana must receive its fair share from the extractive sector,” he said.

He explained that the government’s sliding-scale system was introduced to ensure that the state benefits more when mining companies record higher earnings.

“That is why we introduced the sliding-scale system: when mining companies earn more, the people of Ghana must benefit more!” he said.

The latest dividend represents a sevenfold increase over last year’s payment, highlighting the potential increase in state revenues from the mining sector.

The Minister expressed appreciation to Perseus Mining for the payment on behalf of the government and people of Ghana.
