Police Retrieves 8 Stolen Cars

EIGHT STOLEN taxi cabs, of different brands, have been successfully retrieved from a 37 year-old notorious car thief, Alex Owusu.

The cars includes Dyawoo Matrix, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai, just to mention a few, and they are being kept at the Suntreso Police Station, Kumasi.

The Ashanti Regional Police PRO, ASP Gideon Ahianyo, addressing the media, said Owusu is very cunning and slippery as he always escaped arrest.

He said the police received several reports about how Owusu was using well strategised tricks to steal taxi cabs from unsuspecting taxi drivers.

ASP Ahianyo said Owusu would hire the taxi cab from either Nkawkaw, Bekwai, Tarkwa or Obuasi to Kumasi, where he would steal the taxi cab.

“Owusu will hire the taxi car from any of the above mentioned places to Kumasi, under the pretence of buying a spare parts for his faulty excavator.

“Whilst in Kumasi, Owusu will persuade the driver to wash his car at a washing. Whilst the car is being washed, he will tell the driver to join him in a different car to Suame Magazine.

“At Suame Magazine, he would tell the taxi driver to wait for him as he rushes to the bank to take some money”, the Police PRO said in a recorded video.

According to him, Owusu would then rush to the washing bay and take the car’s ignition keys from the washing bay attendants and drive away.

ASP Ahianyo said the police have received several complaints about Owusu’s activities but getting him apprehended always became difficult.

On August 11, 2020 however, he said the Kasoa District Police Command managed to arrest Owusu and seized eight stolen taxi cabs from him.

The police PRO said the suspect is being kept at the Suntreso Police Station in Kumasi with the stolen cars, urging victims to assist in investigations.

He also said the police are on the heels of Owusu’s accomplices to also face the law, warning taxi drivers to be extra careful so they would not lose their cars to thieves.
