Political rallies cause of COVID-19 case rise in Ghana – Justice Yankson

The General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Justice Yankson has said the several political activities before the 2020 general elections contributed to the recent spike in Ghana’s COVID-19 case count.

To him, the refusal to adhere to the COVID-19 preventive protocols by party supporters led to some political actors contracting the virus, which consequently resulted in a rise in the country’s case count.

“We know political actors who had COVID-19 so when we are discussing this, we should not make it seem like it was just these last two days that we had over 58,000 cases. The truth is that the political activities contributed to the numbers, so nobody should try and dissociate our case count from the political activities,” he said on Citi TV’s Point of View.

He decried how leaders of the various political parties failed to demonstrate leadership by ensuring their members adhere to the protocols during political activities.

“During these political activities, both leaders of the opposition and majority including independent candidates did not demonstrate enough leadership and their members felt the disease is of no importance now.”
