Prisons Service Deny GH₵ 2 Allegation

THE LEADERSHIP of the Prisons Service in the Ashanti Region has categorically debunked an extortion reports in the media about them.

According to DDP Nelson Duut, the Ashanti Regional Prisons Commander, it is not true that visitors pay an amount of GHC 2 before they are allowed to see their jailed relatives.

He stated that there is no iota of truth in the news report therefore the public should treat the report with the contempt that it deserves.

Extortion Reports

Section of the media reported that people were being charged an amount of GHC 2 before they were given access to their jailed relatives in Kumasi.

The amount charged from visitors was said to be used to feed the inmates of the various prisons in the Ashanti region.

The report further stated that the extortion was becoming too much to bear for visitors at the prisons but they can’t complain.

Interestingly, nobody has so far managed to produce any evidence that can confirm that indeed they were charged GHC 2 by prison officers.

Reaction

DDP Nelson Duut reiterated that the reports are false, saying that no prison officer would stop low to demand GH 2 from visitors.

“Apart from the Central Prisons in Kumasi, most of the prisons in the region sometimes do not receive visitors for some days.

“Therefore, the report that the prison service relies on the GHC 2 fee at the gate to feed the prisoners is a hoax so don’t believe them”.

DDP Nelson Duut was speaking to section of the media during a ceremony to celebrate the promotion of some prison officers in Kumasi.
