Prisons Service Recruiting

The Ghana Prisons Service has invited qualified Ghanaians to apply to be recruited into the service this year.

The service has assured of fairness and equal opportunity to all prospective applicants.

The assurance is coming after a similar recruitment exercise into the Ghana Immigration Service and the Police Service made headlines for the wrong reasons.

2018 RECRUITMENT AND ENLISTMENT THE GHANA PRISONS SERVICE

The Ghana Prisons Service invites suitably qualified Ghanaians who are disciplined, hardworking, goal oriented and are interested in public safety through safe custody, welfare, reformation and reintegration of prisoners into the society for recruitment and enlistment.

APPLICATION PROCESS

All recruitment and enlistment applications must be done online only.

1. Purchase an e-voucher at any GCB Bank Limited across the country at the cost of Fifty
Ghana Cedis [GH50.00] only.

2. Give your full official name (Applicant) at the point of purchase.

3. Use your Serial Number [SN] and Pin Code [PIN] to access the application form online at the website address: www.prisons.gov.gh.services (The SN and PIN can be used to print a summary of your application online).

4. Carefully read ALL INSTRUCTIONS before you apply.

5. The online application form is accessible only by the SN and PIN.

6. Keep your UNIQUE NUMBER on the summary report for all the stages of the recruitment and selection process.

7. ALL correspondence with applicants will be done through e-mail and text messages only.

8. Only Short-listed Applicants will be invited for further stages of the recruitment and the enlistment exercise

RECRUITMENT AND ENLISTMENT PROCESS

Applicants are responsible for their own transportation, feeding, accommodation and other expenses throughout the recruitment exercise.

1. Applicants who meet the initial requirements will be short-listed and invited to centres of their choice for further processes.

2. Short-listed applicants will be invited for the following:

a. Physical and Body screening
b. Inspection and verification of all necessary documents c. Aptitude Test
d. Medical Examination

3. Artisans, sportsmen/women and bandsmen who are successful in item 2 above will undertake a competency based test in Accra.

4. Results submitted during the application process shall be verified at WAEC and other appropriate examination bodies hence Applicants who present false documents would be arrested and prosecuted.

5. Applicants who are successful in [2] above will go through a thorough criminal and background check.

6. Applicants who are cleared of criminal records would be invited to commence training.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

1. Sales of e-voucher commence on 19th February and Ends on 9th March, 2018.

2. Online registration starts on 21st February and ends on 12th March, 2018.

3. The Ghana Prisons Service is an equal opportunity employer, hence applicants MUST
refuse offers from “connection men”. Do not pay money to anyone.

4 Apart from applicants with Diploma in Registered General/Psychiatric Nursing and Agriculture who will be appropriately placed, all other applicants shall start from Second Class Officer Rank after completion of training.

5. Apart from Medical Doctors, Dental Surgeons, Doctors of Optometry and Pharmacists who will be appropriately placed, all other graduates shall start from Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (ASP) after completion of training.

6. Artisans, bandsmen and sportsmen/women who are selected will assemble at the Prison Officers Training School in Accra for practical test. The date and time would be communicated to them in course of the recruitment process.

JUNIOR OFFICERS CATEGORY

GENERAL ELIGIBILITY

Applicant must:

a. Be a Ghanaian.

b. Be of good character and without any criminal record.

c. Be physically and medically fit by Prisons Service standards. d. Be between 21 and 32 years by 31st May, 2018.
e. Be between 21 and 35 years by 31st May, 2018. (for artisans only)

f. Not have been dismissed from any public service or any other employment

g. Be of minimum height of 1.68 m (5’6”) for males and 1.57m (5’2”) for females h. Be able to speak and write English Language fluently
i. Have active e-mail account and mobile phone number

j. Be ready to undergo basic Prisons training and other forms of training k. Not be bonded.

CATEGORIES & THEIR REQUIREMENTS

1. GENERAL DUTIES

In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must have SSSCE/WASSCE with at least
Four/ 4 credits and passes in English Language and Mathematics.

2. MEDICAL CATEGORY

(i) GENERAL NURSES

In addition to the General Eligibility, an applicant must possess at least a Diploma in General Nursing, registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council and must have completed his/her rotation.

(ii) PSYCHIATRIC NURSES

In addition to the General Eligibility, an applicant must possess at least a Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing, registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council and must have completed his/her rotation.

(iii) PERI-OPERATIVE/ CRITICAL /INTENSIVE CARE NURSES

In addition to the General Eligibility, an applicant must possess at least a Diploma in Peri-Operative/ Critical/Intensive Care Nursing, registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council and must have completed his/her rotation.
(iv) MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIANS/ASSISTANTS

In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must have SSSCE/WASSCE with at least Four/ 4 credits and passes in English Language and Mathematics together with HND in Medical Laboratory Technology plus two/2 years qualification internship.

(v) NURSE ANESTHETIST

In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must be registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council, completed their rotation and must possess at least a Diploma in Anaesthetic Nursing.

(vi) OPHTHALMIC NURSES

In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must be registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council, completed their rotation and must possess at least a Diploma in Ophthalmic Nursing.

(vii) ORTHOPAEDIC NURSES

In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must be registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council, completed their rotation and must possess at least a Diploma in Orthopaedic Nursing.

3. AGRICULTURE CATEGORY

(i) TECHNICAL OFFICERS

In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must possess at least a
Diploma in Agricultural.

(ii) TRACTOR OPERATORS/MECHANICS

In addition to the General Eligibility and two/2 years practical working experience, an applicant must possess at least one of the following certificates and should be able to repair tractors.

1. Ghana Education Service (GES) Intermediate Certificate in one of the above.
2. Ghana Education Service (GES) or COTVET Certificate II in one of the above.

(iii) HORTICULTURISTS

In addition to the General Eligibility and two/2 years practical working experience, an applicant must possess at least a Certificate in Horticulture.
4. ARTISANS CATEGORIES

(i) ELECTRICIANS
In addition to the General Eligibility, an applicant must possess at least any of the following. a. Ghana Education Service (GES) Intermediate Certificate in Electrical Installation.
b. Ghana Education Service (GES) or COTVET Certificate II in Electrical Works. c. City and Guilds (Intermediate) Certificate in Electrical Engineering.
d. NVTI Grade I or Trade Test Certificate II in Electrical Engineering. (ii) PLUMBERS & MASONS
In addition to the General Eligibility, an applicant must possess at least any of the following.

a. Ghana Education Service (GES) Intermediate Certificate in one of the above. b. Ghana Education Service (GES) or COTVET Certificate in one of the above.
c. City and Guilds (Intermediate) Certificate in one of the above d. NVTI Grade I or Trade Test Certificate II in one of the above.

(iii) WOOD CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY/CARPENTRY

In addition to the General Eligibility, an applicant must possess at least any of the following:

a. Ghana Education Service (GES) Intermediate Certificate in Wood Construction
Technology.
b. Ghana Education Service (GES) or COTVET Certificate II in Wood Construction
Technology.
c. NVTI Grade I or Trade Test Certificate II in Carpentry/Joinery. d. City and Guilds (Intermediate) in Carpentry/Joinery

(iv) WELDING & FABRICATION

In addition to the General Eligibility, an applicant must possess at least any of the following:

a. Ghana Education Service (GES) Intermediate Certificate in Welding and Fabrication
Technology.
b. NVTI Grade I or Trade Test Certificate II in Welding and Fabrication c. COTVET Certificate II in Welding and Fabrication Technology.
d. City and Guilds (Intermediate) in Welding and Fabrication

(iv) METAL SMITH AND WEAPON FITTERS (ARMOURERS)

In addition to the General Eligibility, an applicant must possess at least any of the following:

a. GES (COTVET) Certificate II in Mechanical Engineering Technology b. GES Intermediate Certificate in Welding Craft Practice
c. GES (COTVET) Certificate II in Welding and Fabrication Technology d. City and Guilds Certificate in Electrical and Gas Welding
(vi) REFRIGERATION AND AIR-CONDITIONING TECHNOLOGY

In addition to the General Eligibility, an applicant must possess at least any of the following:

a. Ghana Education Service (GES) Intermediate Certificate in Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Technology.
b. Ghana Education Service (GES) or COTVET Certificate II in Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Technology.
c. NVTI Grade I or Trade Test Certificate II in Refrigeration and Air-
Conditioning Technology.
d. City and Guilds (Intermediate) in Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning.

5. TRANSPORT CATEGORIES

DRIVER MECHANICS/DRIVER ELECTRICIANS/ AUTO ELECTRICIANS

In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must possess a Professional Driver’s Licence Class D or above which should not be less than two/2 years and at least any of the following qualifications.

a. Ghana Education Service (GES) Intermediate Certificate in Motor
Vehicle Engineering/ Electrician
b. Ghana Education Service (GES) or COTVET Certificate II in Motor Vehicle
Engineering/ Electrician.
c. City and Guilds (Intermediate) Certificate (Internal Combustion Engines and Motor Vehicles/ Electrician).
d. City and Guilds (Intermediate) Certificate in Motor Vehicle Engineering/ Electrician.
e. NVTI Grade I or Trade Test Certificate II in Motor Vehicle Engineering/ Electrician.

6. TAILORS, TEXTILES & DESIGN AND COBBLERS/LEATHER WORK

In addition to General Eligibility, an applicant must possess at least any of the following:

a. Ghana Education Service (GES) Intermediate Certificate in one of the above.
b. Ghana Education Service (GES) or COTVET Certificate II in one of the above.
c. NVTI Grade I or Trade Test Certificate II in one of the above. d. City and Guilds (Intermediate) in one of the above.

7. BANDSMEN

In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must have SSSCE/WASSCE with at least five/5 passes including English Language and Mathematics or Ghana Education Service (GES)
Intermediate Certificate/ COTVET Certificate II/ NVTI Grade I or Trade Test Certificate II/ City and Guilds (Intermediate)/ or Proficiency in Basic Music (ABRSM) grade 4 and the following:

a. Ability to sight-read musical notes.
b. Ability to play Wood Wind or Brass Instruments.

Theory and previous experience in a recognised music group will be an added advantage.

8. COOKS/CATERERS
In addition to the General Eligibility, an applicant must possess at least any of the following. a. NVTI Grade I or Trade Test Certificate II in Hospitality and Catering
Management
b. Ghana Education Service (GES) Intermediate Certificate or COTVET Certificate II in Hospitality and Catering Management.
c. City and Guilds (Intermediate) in the above.

9. SPORTSMEN/WOMEN
The sporting disciplines are as follows a. Taekwondo
b. Boxing
c. Athletics d. Football
e. Basketball f. Volleyball g. Hockey
h. Handball
i. Table Tennis
j. Judo

In addition to the General Eligibility (excluding serials d and e), applicants in the above disciplines must be of a minimum age of 18 and not more than 25 years by 31st May, 2018 and must possess at least four/4 passes at SSSCE/WASSCE or BECE plus any vocational/trade certificate.

Applicants shall undergo practical test in their respective disciplines.
GRADUATES CATEGORY

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

All candidates are to satisfy the following requirements:

1. GENERAL ELEGIBILTY/REQUIREMENT

 Must be a Ghanaian citizen by birth with no criminal record.
 Must possess at least first Degree from an accredited university and other relevant professional qualification where specified.
 Must have completed his/her National Service.
 Must be computer literate.
 Must be of a minimum age of 21 and not more than 35 years by 31st May, 2018.
 Must be physically and medically fit by the Prisons Service standard.
 Must be of good character, have ability to work under pressure and difficult environment
 Must not be bonded.
 Must have a minimum height of 1.67metres (5ft 6inches) for Males and 1.57 metres
(5ft 2inches) for Female.
 Must have active an e-mail account and a mobile phone number.
 Be ready to undergo basic Prison Training and other forms of training.
 Medical professionals must have completed one year post housemanship with a registered hospital or clinic

2. GENERAL DUTIES

In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must have a minimum of first degree in any of the following areas. Any additional qualification will be an added advantage.

(a) M.A. in Clinical Psychology
(b) B.A. Psychology
(c) Social Sciences/ Humanities

3. EDUCATION

In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must have

(a) B.ED Basic Education
(b) B.ED Early Childhood Education
(c) B.ED Guidance and Counselling
4. TECHNICAL OFFICERS

In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must have at least
(a) BSc Land Economy
(b) Building Technology
i. BSc. Quantity Surveying and Construction Technology ii. BSc. Construction Technology and Management
(c) BSc Geomatic/ Geodetic Engineering
(d) BSc Civil Engineering
(e) BSc Mechanical Engineering
(f) BSc Electrical Engineering

Previous working experience will be an added advantage

5. PUBLIC AFFAIRS

In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must have at least:

(a) BA Communication Studies/ Public Relations.
(b) A first degree in any discipline and a Diploma in Communication
Studies/ Public Relations.

A minimum of 2 years working experience in a reputable print media will be an added advantage.

6. MEDICAL CORPS

(a) MEDICAL DOCTOR

In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must at least possess Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or Medical Doctor (MD) and a registered member of the Medical and Dental Council.

(b) DENTAL SURGEON

In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must at least possess Bachelor of Dentistry
(BDS) and a registered member of the Medical and Dental Council.

(c) DOCTOR OF OPTOMETRY

In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must at least possess B.Sc (Optometry) or B.Sc (Ophthalmic Science) or B.Sc. (Vision Science) or post graduate diploma in Optometry and a registered member of the Ghana Optometric Association.
(d) PHARMACIST

In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must at least possess BSc Pharmacy (B. Pharm) from an accredited University and a registered member of the Ghana Pharmacy Council or the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana.

(e) PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must at least possess B.Sc. Physician Assistant or B.Sc. Medical Assistant and a registered member of the Medical and Dental Council.

(f) MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST

In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must at least possess B.Sc. Medical Laboratory
Technology and a registered member of the Medical and Dental Council.

(g) NURSES

In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must have at least possessed BSc Nursing and a License from the Nursing and Midwives Council of Ghana.

Previous working experience will be an added advantage.

7. LEGAL OFFICERS

In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must have a minimum of LLB/BL, called to the
Bar and a minimum of 2 years professional working experience.

8. AGRICULTURE

In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must have at least BSc in Agriculture and a minimum of 2 years professional working experience.

9. RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS

In addition to the general eligibility, applicants must be an:

(a) ORDAINED MINISTER OR CHAPLAIN

(i) Have at least a first degree in Theology.
Be of good standing in a Christian denomination approved by the
Ghana
Catholic Secretariat, the Christian Council of Ghana, the Pentecostal Council of Ghana or other recognized Christian Bodies.

(b) IMAM

(i) Have at least a first degree in Islamic Studies with an excellent knowledge in Arabic.
(ii) Be of good standing in a Muslim denomination approved by the
Office of the National/ Regional Chief Imam, the office of the
Ameer of the Ahmadiyya

Muslim Mission or other similar nationally recognized Muslim bodies.
