Rawlings Commends North and South Korea for Uniting

The leaders of both North and South Korea, Kim Yong-Un and Moon Jae-in, respectively, must be commended for ending the feud between the two countries, former President Jerry John Rawlings, has said.

At a summit the two countries vowed Friday to seek a nuclear-free peninsula and work toward a formal end to the Korean War this year, though their historic summit concluded with few specifics on how they will reach those ambitious goals.

They set aside a year that saw them seemingly on the verge of war. They grasped hands and strode together across the cracked concrete marking the Koreas’ border.

The sight, inconceivable just months ago, may not erase their failure to provide any new measures on a nuclear standoff that has captivated and terrified millions, but it allowed the leaders to step forward toward the possibility of a cooperative future even as they acknowledged a fraught past and the widespread skepticism that, after decades of failed diplomacy, things will be any different this time.

Mr Rawlings in a statement cautioned the two leaders to be wary of countries that are not happy with the development.

He said : “ I applaud the meeting between North Korea’s Kim Yong-Un and South Korea’s Moon Jae-in and urge them to guide against the possibilities of countries who will be displeased with the development and who more importantly may be seeking ways to drop monkey wrenches in this peace agenda.

“The peace and stability of their of the people of countries must derive its strength, tenacity and endurance from the fabric of the goodwill that must be nurtured in the genuine belief of the good they seek for their people and to be wary of third parties whose interest may not necessarily have the same noble objectives that they the leadership may wish for their people.”
