Ghanaian music executive Richie Mensah has been appointed as a voting member of the Recording Academy, the body responsible for organizing the prestigious Grammy Awards.
The celebrated music producer, singer, songwriter, and Chief Executive Officer of Lynx Group of Companies announced the news by sharing an artwork from the Recording Academy that confirmed his appointment.
In a Facebook post, Richie expressed his gratitude, writing, “thank you Recording Academy for the honour.”
The announcement has generated excitement across Ghana’s entertainment industry, with many describing it as a major milestone for the country’s growing music scene. While a few Ghanaians are already members of the Academy but have not made it public, music lovers believe Richie’s inclusion will help spotlight Ghanaian talent and strengthen the country’s global presence in music.
Richie Mensah is widely known for producing and nurturing some of Ghana’s biggest music stars. Through his Lynx Entertainment record label, he has developed top talents such as Kuami Eugene, KiDi, Asem, Eazzy, MzVee, DopeNation, Zigi, and the late OJ Blaq. His contributions have helped shape modern Ghanaian pop and Afrobeats music.
A few weeks ago, Lady Dentaa Amoateng, consultant to the Recording Academy’s CEO Harvey Mason Jr., highlighted the need for more African representation in the Academy.
Speaking on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz show, she said Ghana’s chances at the Grammys would remain limited until more Ghanaians joined.
“That is why we need Africans to be able to vote. If you are on the Board, you have voting rights… If there are more of us on that platform, then you won’t get non-Africans infusing in that category too much. So I think it is really important,” she explained. Dentaa also revealed plans to campaign for more Ghanaians to become Academy members.
The Recording Academy currently has over 16,000 members, including more than 13,000 voting members made up of artists, songwriters, producers, engineers, and other music professionals.
