Socrate Safo offers support to NDC to grow creative industry

Ghanaian filmmaker and loyal New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Socrate Safo, has stirred public interest by openly praising the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its stronger support for the creative arts industry.

In an interview with Joy FM’s Kwame Dadzie on July 13th 2025, Safo boldly said he wasn’t afraid of backlash from his NPP colleagues. He admitted that he still feels “jealous” of the opportunities given to creative people under NDC governments.

Safo, who once served as the Director for Creative Arts at the National Commission on Culture, explained that the NDC seems to understand the creative sector better than the NPP. He said the NDC offers more platforms, recognition, and respect to industry players.

Safo shared his thoughts, saying, “Not everybody understands. Some do, some don’t. And in politics, there are some people who take everything you say as negative. But we must come clean say things as they are.”

When asked whether he had plans to join the NDC, he firmly responded with no.

Even though he remains committed to the NPP, Safo said he is more focused on the growth of Ghana’s creative sector than on political loyalty. He revealed that he had reached out to important people in the industry to offer ideas.

“I called Rex Omar because I had ideas to share and wanted to be part of the conversation,” he said, referring to the Presidential Staffer in charge of the Black Star Experience.

He also contacted actress and producer Kafui Danku to discuss problems creatives continue to face.

Safo’s comments have sparked a fresh conversation about how both political parties treat the arts. While he stays with the NPP, he made it clear his top priority is the progress of Ghana’s creative industry, not politics.
