Sports Minister: Ghana’s Coach Has Not Resigned

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, says he has not received any official resignation letter from Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz despite reports that the Portuguese coach has stepped down.

Speculation about Queiroz’s future started after he shared an emotional message on social media following Ghana’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His post led many football fans to believe he had resigned from his role as head coach.

However, Mr Adams said the government and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) would only recognise an official resignation and not a social media post.

“We have not received any resignation letter from the FA to that effect, and I don’t take it that people resigned on social media. He wasn’t appointed on social media, so I don’t think that he resigned via social media,” the Minister said during an interview on Joy FM’s News Night on July 6, 2026.

Queiroz’s social media message suggested that his time with the Black Stars had come to an end. In the post, he wrote say that “I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more”.

The Portuguese coach also spoke about the future of Ghana football. He said success for the Black Stars should not depend only on what happens during matches but also on creating the right systems to prepare, protect and develop talented players.

Speaking about Ghana’s performance at the World Cup, Mr Adams said he had not yet held a meeting with Queiroz to discuss the team’s campaign in detail.

Instead, he explained that the coach is expected to submit a full report on the team’s activities during the tournament. The report is expected to cover the team’s preparations, performances and the challenges they faced during the competition.

“We have all been watching the games, and so we all appreciate that. We have not had the opportunity of engaging him to get a detailed report. That report will surely come,” he said.

According to the Minister, the report will help officials understand both the football and administrative challenges affecting the Black Stars. He said it would also guide future decisions aimed at improving the national team.

Mr Adams agreed with Queiroz’s view that Ghana football needs improvements both on and off the pitch.

“And he’s right when he says it’s not just going to be on the pitch. There are off-pitch issues and there are on-pitch issues also. I’m happy he has stated it clearly,” he said.

He added that he expects the coach’s report to identify the key problems facing the national team and provide recommendations on how Ghana can build a stronger football system in the future.

Queiroz was appointed Black Stars head coach on April 23, 2026, after Otto Addo left the position. His main responsibility was to guide Ghana through the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Before the tournament, Mr Adams explained that Queiroz’s appointment was based on a short-term contract lasting up to four months. He said any decision to extend the coach’s stay would depend on his performance with the national team.

Although Queiroz’s social media message has fueled speculation about his future, the Sports Minister insists that no official decision has been made. Until an official resignation letter is received or the Ghana Football Association announces otherwise, the Portuguese coach remains the Black Stars’ head coach in the eyes of the government.
