Stop Turning Away Fresh Graduates – Companies told
The Chief Executive Officer of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIB), Anthony Yaw Oppong, has urged companies to give fresh graduates the opportunity to work and gain the needed experience in their professions.
According to him, the situation where young, fresh graduates are turned away with the excuse that they don’t have the requisite experience does not auger well for the country.
“How are they going to get the job experience if every company is only interested in employing experienced people”, he quizzed.
Speaking to journalists at the CIB’s 8th Graduation and Congregation for 59 students over the weekend, Mr. Oppong urged companies to give the chance to fresh graduates so they can work and have the needed experience.
He disclosed that the Institute had entered into an agreement with some Banks and Financial Institutions in the country to accept its students for a three-month on-the-job training.
“This will help the students who have little or no experience of what pertains in the job market to have the opportunity to learn. This will make it easier for them to get job when they graduate because they now have practical experience”, he said.
He advised the graduating students to put up good behavior as they enter the job market, stating “As you go out as Chartered Bankers, have in mind the fact that the industry’s expectations of you in your line of duty will be very high.
“Endeavour to be recognised for your in-depth knowledge in the banking and finance terrain. Be customer focused and exhibit professionalism in all you do.
“You will face challenges but this is what the “real world” is all about and the next phase in your life is a great training ground for your future success”.
Concluding, Oppong hinted that the Institute, in keeping with its mandate to establish and maintain world class standards of education and experience for persons engaged in the practice of banking and financial services, is working to modify its existing curriculum.
