Stop Twisting My Wife’s Words: We’re Together

Ghanaian sports journalist Kofi Owusu Aduonum has said he and Afua Asantewaa of sing-a-thon fame are happy together as husband and wife, and that her recent comment that the couple separated long ago was taken out of context.

“People misunderstood my wife. When she says we have separated, people misunderstand her. When she said we are separated, she meant we are in different geographical locations. Anything my wife says, people read meanings into and twist her words. It is a deliberate attempt to attack her, and it is not helping us. It has to stop.

“Even with her streetlights project, people started to tag her as a scammer. This has continued for too long, and it is affecting us,” Mr Aduonum told Empress Gifty, host of United Showbiz on UTV, when he himself called into the show late Saturday night and requested that he be given the platform to speak.

According to him, there is a sustained and deliberate agenda against his dear wife, Mrs Afua Asantewaa Owusu Aduonum. He claims she has suffered as a victim of cyber-bullying for too long.

Kofi Aduonum was emphatic that their marriage was still intact, although he is aware many Ghanaians wish it had failed.

“I can place my hand on my chest and tell you that there is no problem. Everything has been solved. We have met, and there is no issue. The only thing we need from Ghanaians is prayers, because Ghanaians have used their mouths to break up our marriage too many times, but God is king. We have resolved our issues. Yesterday is gone; let’s look to the future. There are children involved, and there are many things we have heard that are not useful,” Kofi Aduonum added.

He disagreed with the suggestion that one of the people to whom Afua Asantewaa publicly exhibited an ungrateful attitude was former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, when she told the public that he never supported her sing-a-thon attempt aside from giving her medicine for her sore throat.

Kofi explained that the fact that he and Asantewaa went with her parents to the residence of Dr Bawumia to thank him after the sing-a-thon attempt is evidence that she is grateful for the help he and several others gave her.

The husband clarified that it was after that visit to thank Dr Bawumia that Asantewaa, while being interviewed, was asked if it was true that she had been given a new vehicle and a new house as gifts. To this, she replied that the only thing she received from the former Vice President during that visit was medicine to treat her sore throat.

Reports that Kofi and Asantewaa were no longer together became topical after the wife started granting interviews on social media to give details of their purported separation and the challenges in their marriage, amidst loads of allegations against her.

She subsequently issued a public statement on the matter:

Official Statement from Afua Asantewaa

In light of recent public discussions and circulating narratives regarding my personal life, I find it necessary to address the situation with clarity, dignity, and respect for all parties involved.

I wish to formally confirm that my husband and I are no longer together. This decision was reached privately and with careful consideration, and I kindly request that this transition be treated with the sensitivity it deserves.

It has come to my attention that certain false claims and misleading interpretations have been circulated. I would like to categorically state that many of these assertions are inaccurate and do not reflect the truth of the situation. I urge the public and media to refrain from speculation and to respect the boundaries of my personal life.

I also wish to address the perception that I have been ungrateful. Let me be clear: I am, and have always been, deeply appreciative of every individual, opportunity, and experience that has contributed to my journey. Any portrayal suggesting otherwise does not represent who I am.

As a woman committed to growth, purpose, and impact, I remain focused on my path. I will continue to pursue my dreams, break barriers, and contribute meaningfully to society through my work and advocacy.

If any of my expressions or utterances during this period have been misunderstood or have caused unintended concern, I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or distress caused. That was never my intention.

I appreciate the continued support, understanding, and goodwill from my community, partners, and the public as I navigate this phase with strength and grace.

Thank you.
Afua Asantewaa
