The auditorium of Grace Mountain Chapel, home to the popular Alpha Hour prayer movement, was set on fire by a woman, who appeared to be a worshipper, on the evening of February 9, 2026, forcing the head pastor, Pastor Elvis Agyemang to close down the auditorium temporarily.
A viral CCTV footage captured the woman, visibly pouring what is suspected to be petrol on chairs in the church auditorium and on part of a wall near the altar after which she lighted a match stick and threw it on the chairs she had poured the suspected petrol on.
The auditorium was immediately engulfed in a blazing fire.
The suspect has reportedly been arrested, although the police have not officially confirmed the arrest on their social media platforms as of now.
Pastor Elvis Agyemang, convener of Alpha Hour, has expressed shock over the attack and questioned what would drive someone to target a house of worship and set it ablaze.
“How much hatred can you have? Are you a sent? How much hatred would make you take a fuel, petrol, sprinkle it in a church and set it on fire?
Alpharians if you don’t know, a lady tried to set the whole church on fire yesterday in the evening. She came around like she was praying whiles others were praying, and all of a sudden… I appreciate our security very much. Nothing will stop us, the devil will not stop us, we will fix the place and prayer will still go on”, he stated.
The fire, though quickly contained, left Pastor Elvis with no choice but to suspend all in-person prayers at the auditorium indefinitely. He told Alpharians, the thousands of daily attendees of the one-hour prayer meeting, that they would not be allowed to enter the hall for now. This announcement was made following the incident on Tuesday February, 10, 2026 through one of his live Prayer section.
“From this morning you cannot come to the auditorium to pray. Everyone knows the auditorium is almost half full every moment of the day, people are praying, so we are unable to close our own auditorium, but from today until further notice, I am sorry you cannot come because of what someone did yesterday in the evening,” he said.
Pastor Elvis also praised the church security for their swift response, which prevented the fire from spreading further. He linked the attack to spiritual attacks aimed at defiling the altar, noting that the church had previously faced a similar incident in 2025 when someone sprayed powder in the auditorium.
He further explained that such acts reflect demonic influence on humans, feeding hatred among people. The woman suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue to determine her motive and whether she acted alone or with accomplices.
Alpha Hour is a daily one-hour prayer meeting that begins at 12 a.m. GMT and is broadcast live on social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Zoom. The initiative started in February 2022 after Pastor Agyemang said he received a vision to launch an intensive prayer ministry focused on spiritual revival and victory. The movement has grown significantly over the years, drawing tens of thousands of participants worldwide, with broadcasts extending to television and radio stations across Ghana.
Grace Mountain Chapel, located in Accra, is a large auditorium capable of hosting thousands of worshippers. Alpha Hour followers, commonly referred to as “Alpharians,” regularly gather to participate in the prayer sessions, which have become a key spiritual activity for many Ghanaians.
Despite the attack, Pastor Elvis remains determined to continue the ministry. He assured worshippers that prayer will resume once the necessary repairs are completed.
