The Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini, has commissioned a newly constructed bridge over the Offin River in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region, describing it as more than just the unveiling of infrastructure.
According to him, the project represents the restoration of safety, the renewal of hope, and the fulfilment of a government promise to the people.
The new bridge replaces an old, weakened structure that had become a major risk to commuters, especially farmers transporting produce from Kotokuom and surrounding communities to urban centres. Years of heavy use by heavy-duty trucks had left the previous bridge fragile, with broken beams, deep cracks, and damaged pillars.
“We are gathered here not just to commission a piece of infrastructure. We are here to celebrate the restoration of safety, the renewal of hope, and the fulfilment of a promise made to this community,” Mr. Suhuyini said at the ceremony.
He recalled how the old bridge had become a symbol of danger and a “death trap that threatened livelihoods,” adding that images and videos of its condition on social media amplified calls for urgent action.
The new bridge construction comes after the Roads and Highways Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza on March 3, 2025, directed the closure of the bridge after engineers declared it unsafe.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, joined Mr. Suhuyini at the event to formally hand over the project to the community.
